March brought an extra dose of cuteness to Medicine Horse as we welcomed some very special guests—nine, seven-week-old, black lab puppies from our friends at Canine Partners of the Rockies! These little bundles of energy are training to become magnificent service dogs, dedicated to helping people who need them most.

A Big, Brave Day for Some Little Pups

With tails wagging and noses sniffing, the puppies bravely faced some of their biggest challenges yet—our horses, mini horses, donkeys, goats, and sheep! Our Medicine Horse herd greeted them with gentle curiosity, watching their tiny visitors with fascination. Even our self-appointed barn supervisor, Butterscotch, made a brief but dignified appearance to check in on the action.
Despite the size difference, the puppies were fearless, taking in every new sight, sound, and smell with tails wagging. These early socialization experiences are essential in their journey to becoming service dogs, helping them build confidence and adaptability—skills that will one day change lives.
A Shared Mission of Healing

At Medicine Horse, we see every day how the human-animal bond can transform lives. Our horses provide comfort, connection, and healing for people facing life’s challenges, much like these future service dogs will for their partners. Witnessing these pups take their first steps toward their important roles reminded us just how powerful and intuitive animals can be in helping humans navigate the world.
Of course, we have to admit—it was very tempting to "accidentally" keep one of these pups forever. (Don’t worry, we resisted.)
Support Future Service Dogs
Canine Partners of the Rockies is doing incredible work preparing these puppies for their future as Mobility Service Dogs and Facility Dogs:
🐾 Mobility Service Dogs will provide independence and companionship to individuals with physical disabilities by retrieving objects, opening and closing doors, turning light switches on and off, and more—helping their partners navigate daily life with confidence.
🐾 Facility Dogs will work alongside professionals in schools, counseling offices, and hospitals, offering emotional and physical support to multiple clients in a therapeutic setting.
Their dogs empower independence, bring companionship, and change lives. If you’d like to support their mission, visit their website to learn more about their programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways to give.
Moments to Remember
Moments like these remind us of the deep connection between humans and animals and the healing power they bring into our lives—whether they have hooves or paws! In times of doubt or struggle, let’s take a moment to appreciate and honor these incredible creatures for all the love, joy, and support they give us.
